The annual activity of the Buenos Aires Museum of Latin American Art dedicated to children (because of the school winter break) was this 2010 oriented towards sustainability and curated by Ana Lisa Alperovich and Pablo Ferraro, organizer of the Sustainable Festival (and friend) and designer of the brand Kom, respectively.
And, of course, the collection of products that will be presented at the Malba design store from July 20 to August 31 bears their stamp, quite different from the collections prepared by Pesqueira last year and Satori in 2007.
All are made by designers related to the field of sustainability in different aspects, and with materials somehow responsible with the environment. According to a press release, among them are: African animals in reforestation maple wood, Patagonian maras from discarded textiles printed with water based inks, a biodegradable wool felt game inspired in landscapes of the Puna, little stamps with insects and animals motives, mini cars made of recontextualized plastic waste, ready to assemble stools in reclaimed pine wood, slippers hand-knitted with textile discards, cardboard pencil-boxes developed in a social project from Paraná, and FSC certified wood games, based on the Waldorf education theory.
The goal, say the curators, is to invite children to explore different modes of play and encourage contact with nature and noble materials. “Malba Kids, Sustainable edition proposes a return to playthings, useful and durable, in noble materials with low environmental impact. Competitively priced and made by Argentine designers produced in small workshops. With this collection and under this context, the curators intend to inspire both children, and grown ups to take more responsible consumer choices, as well as to guide designers and producers to be more critical and creative with what they bring to the world”, concludes the press release.
Especially lovely are the wool felt game, designed by Ana Lisa, Kom and the brand Planar , as well as the baby shoes hand-woven with textile discards by Plantamor.
The Design Collection is complemented by a workshop of masks from household waste for kids, which will be offered by Lala Ladcani and Sol Marinucci on Tuesday, July 20 July at 16.00, with free admission (o sea: start looking around for some kid to steal for a while so you have an excuse to go).
